Zong expands its mobile coverage in Pakistan.

China Mobile Pakistan has announced plans to increase the network coverage of its Pakistani mobile operator Zong to up to 9,000 sites across the country by the end of 2009. It was reported in the local media that the proposed expansion involves an investment of US$500 million. The Chinese company has reportedly already invested US$1.66 billion in Pakistan, including US$600 million invested in 2008/2009 fiscal year, therefore making a substantial contribution to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country’s telecommunications and IT industry.

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the country had a total of 26,300 mobile base station sites by the end of 2008. Five mobile operators added 8,966 sites in the first half of the 2008/2009 fiscal year.
