VERTEL – WIRELESS VETERANS – JULY 2005
Deregulation of the Australian telecommunications industry may have occurred in 1997 but it was 1973 when a salesman of the iconic Hills Hoist walked away from clothes lines and into the startup Communication Site Rentals – the first and oldest remaining private pioneer of wireless communications in Australia.
Over the 25 years to 1998, Communication Site Rentals build up a national site portfolio of more than 100 of Australia’s tallest telecommunication structures. These sites were use to provide traditional push to talk two way radio communications to large commercial and government fleet users.
Changing its name to Vertical Telecoms (Vertel) in 2000, the business now operates the largest national private two-way radio network and site portfolio in Australia. What I didn’t know is that they have also spent the last 3 years developing its own broadband wireless network using licensed and unlicensed point to point / multipoint microwave technologies. They are the first / last mile wireless point to point link partner of Powertel and manage and maintain a number of high capacity / high value ‘niche’ networks. With a focus on high speed access (10Mbps and above) and a range of industry specific applications, Vertel have delivered a number of highly innovative and value adding solutions to users in the post-production, carrier / service provider and transport / logistics industries.
