The Virtual MSO

Apple’s planned subscription service and Netflix’ streaming service could be considered early examples of Virtual Multiple System Operators (MSO). VMSO offerings may include premium content (pay TV), scheduled TV programming and web TV/Video-On-Demand (VoD), all accessed via multi-devices including large screens appropriate for home viewing.

Numerous business models may be applied to generate revenue including subscription services, advertising and e-commerce/m-commerce transaction capabilities. For example, the VMSO model may provide the option of free access to ad-supported web video or subscription services to premium content.

In 2010 we are beginning to see such services emerging and potential players in this market in the future may include Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Vizio, LG, Sony, Samsung, Comcast, Verizon, AT&T – just to name a few.
