The NBN and the business market

While there has been a great deal of emphasis on the customer access network the NBN will also most certainly cater for the business market. The business market is certainly more lucrative, but at the same it is also the most demanding.

In March 2010, NBN Co clearly indicated that it is building its network with an awareness of the business-grade quality that would be needed by this market. End-to-end QoS, reliability and the need to be able to use the network for new developments such as cloud computing are certainly being taken into account, and very high speeds will be available to cater for the capacity needed by these larger organisations.

NBN Co will add redundancy to the network on a needs basis, as well as provide for high-speed symmetric circuits. While sticking to its Layer 2 concept of the NBN the company has indicated that its network will be able to support the full range of business services.

The company has indicated it will not overbuild existing fibre connections, but according to its own research this represents a rather small proportion of the total business market.

NBN Co also fully understands that it will have to provide these services at commercially attractive rates, and it is fully committed to do this.
