Northern Territory developments – SEMS
Under HealthConnect funding, eHealth NT and local divisions of GPs built a secure electronic messaging service (SEMS) to support the transfer of shared e-health records and e-prescriptions. Patients were tired of filling out forms and starting to realise the lack of information flow in healthcare. As that phenomenon grows, there will be pressure on healthcare and IT providers to build audit trails across care settings. Faxing or posting of records which may have been incorrectly delivered are now sent securely.
The system was trialled between 2004 and 2007 at 10 medical clinics and sites. The SEMS rollout was completed in 2009 and is used at all public hospitals and over 220 other health organisations in the Northern Territory.
