MAJOR UPGRADE OF SOLOMON ISLANDS NETWORK – APRIL 2006

New Zealand wireless communications provider Broadcast Communications and its sister company THL Australia have been working on a radio network upgrade for the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC). THL has had an established relationship with SIBC since 1999.

A high frequency radio broadcast service spanning 1600 square kilometres of the island will be available when the upgrade is completed.

The project began in October 2005 and involves the installation and commissioning of a 12kW high frequency broadcast transmitter. Installation of line transformers is also being undertaken, as well as replacement of 9MHz and 5MHz transmit antennas. The 9MHz service, intended for daytime use, had already been completed by this time.
