Everything Everywhere trials LTE in 800MHz band
The UK’s 3G and mobile data market is one of the largest in Europe. Competition among network operators has induced them to provide similar pricing and usage models, commonly including between 3GB and 10GB per month. This has substantially increased consumer use of mobile data. Low-key data applications such as SMS dominate the market while mobile TV, though widely available, has thus far failed to capture public attention.
Although the UK remains behind some other countries for LTE deployment, both in commercial launches and the availability of suitable spectrum, there have been a number of important trials in preparation for the award of licences following a key spectrum auction scheduled for early 2012. Everything Everywhere has partnered with BT Wholesale to trial LTE in rural Cornwall using 800MHz spectrum. Neither Everything Everywhere nor H3 have sub-1GHz allocations, which can be re-farmed for mobile broadband services, unlike Vodafone UK and O2, so their use of the spectrum depends on the anticipated issue of licenses in 2013.
This updated United Kingdom – Mobile Data Market Insights – 3G, 4G and Forecasts report surveys the UK’s mobile data market in 2011, providing an overview of 3G developments, regulatory issues and technologies.
