Australia – Smart Grids – Major Players & Projects
Nexium Telecommunications, a subsidiary of Ergon Energy, has signed a $20 million agreement with BHP Billiton-Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). The deal gives BMA access, via retailer Equant, to Nexium’s spare fibre optic capacity on networks that are used by Ergon Energy, Powerlink, Southern Cross Telecommunications, Uecomm and Queensland Rail.
This will for the first time give the coal producer a high-speed networking capability between its fourteen Bowen Basin mine sites and its key offices in Brisbane and Melbourne.
The spare network capacity became available when Ergon Energy upgraded its fibre optic network. This made it possible for Nexium to connect large customers into Ergon’s own broadband network.
Offering a data transfer speed 10 to 1,000 times greater than ADSL Nexium hopes to build on the close working relationship it enjoys with Powerlink, Southern Cross Telecommunications, Uecomm, Equant, QCN and QR in developing other telecoms solutions in regional Australia.
