With the second-generation of Broadband over Powerlines (BPL) this technology is emerging as a real contender for infrastructure-based competition - especially in regional areas, outer metro areas and other niche markets. Its performance is superior to ADSL and can be offered at very competitive prices. Incumbent telcos are getting worried, which is a clear indication of its potential. VoIP is already available over BPL and IPTV is not too far behind. The real benefit of BPL however, will be home automation, demand side management and smart metering applications for the utilities.
